The Importance of School Councils

albert head shot

It is my position that School Councils are established in Georgia to "bring communities and schools closer together in a spirit of cooperation to: solve difficult education problems, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents and community stakeholders into the school-based decision-making process.

School councils provide advice, recommendations, and assistance to principals and local boards of education. The Georgia Law details the composition of the council, its responsibilities, and procedures for conducting business.

It is also my position that the majority of school councils in Area 1 schools are not representative of the community it serves and not operating in a comprehensive and effective manner.

New Mableton Town Square Opens

New Mableton Town Square Opens

MABLETON, GA -- The new Mableton Town Square was officially unveiled on Thursday, April 28.

The $2.2 million project creates a new football field-sized public park for the community next door to 5220 Church Street, Mableton. The joint project by Cobb County Community Development, PARKS and Department of Transportation was funded by the county 2011 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

The ceremony, which included a performance by Mableton Elementary School students, marks continuing community improvements that started in 2001 with a development effort known as “Lifelong Mableton.”

In 2009, the Atlanta Regional Commission embarked on a program called “Lifelong Communities” to study how localities could improve facilities for seniors so they could remain in their original homes.

In 2010, Cobb County had a town plan created for the area, resulting in the Mableton Design Charette code. In August 2012, the Cobb School System and the County worked collaboratively to design and open Mableton Elementary School as a part of the plan.

The Town Square project improves pedestrian safety and connectivity to the elementary school. It also involved the development of a new roadway, known as Mableton Town Square, at Walker Drive and Old Floyd Road. Originally known as the Walker Drive project, it accommodates on-street parking and wide sidewalks to encourage pedestrian activity.

Mableton Proposal (RFP) for obtaining services of new Design Firm - A huge plus +   for our community

Weare Pleased to report that the Cobb Board of Commissioners approved the Request for Proposal (RFP) to commission the services of design firm for this project.  The areas in our district that will covered by the design guideline proposal are Veterans Memorial Highway, Mableton Parkway, and Austell Road.
This is the first important step in the process of establishing architectural design guidelines for Mableton.  The next step will be County staff sending out the RFP to interested firms in order to determine cost and scale.
Thanks to Carolyn Turner and Tony Womble for coming to the BOC meeting to show support.
A special thanks to Commissioner Cupid for her support in spearheading this important project. Also to Galt Porter for his advice and encouragement.

How Much Have Home Values Changed in South Cobb?

Has your property value increased or decreased since 2004, when housing prices began to bubble only to collapse in 2007? How has your area recovered since then?

Those are the questions The Washington Post set out to answer, not just for the country overall but for individual towns and neighborhoods, a total 19,000 U.S. zip codes.

Home values in the 30168 zip code in South Cobb decreased more than $18,000 compared to values in 2004.

In Brooklyn, New York, for example, home prices have increased by 146 percent since 2004. But in Decatur, Georgia, a suburb outside of Atlanta, prices are down 25 percent.
